Always Maintain Only a Joyful Mind | Reflections

March 31st

#21- Always maintain only a joyful mind.
Constantly apply cheerfulness, if for no other reason than because you are on this spiritual path. Have a sense of gratitude to everything, even difficult emotions, because of their potential to wake you up.

“Whistle while you work,” was the thought that came to mind with today’s Compassion Card. I laughed because I don’t whistle very well. The intention though is to be cheerful as I engage in the experiences of the day. The lyrics of the song from the Disney movie “Snow White” instructs us to sing song to set the pace, and dance to the tune. Another line goes “When there’s too much to do, don’t let it bother you, forget your troubles. Try to be just like a cheerful chick-a-dee.”

Sure, I had a few moments where it took extra concentration on a project that needed repaired yet being appreciative for that moment and how I could respond to the unpleasant feelings that arose vs. react. A few mindful deep breaths paved the way for the project wrapped up all neat with a bow.

I can see that by having an attitude that is positive, determined, and open-hearted sustained the day to move along with ease.

Pema Chödrön’s Compassion Cards – This practice is lojong (mind-training slogans) and they are powerful reminders on how to awaken our hearts. They are also found in “The Compassion Book.” You choose the cards at random, read the commentary, and then try to live by the meaning of the slogan throughout the day.
